Syracuse Finance Professor says couple made a slew of financial and romantic mistakes

"I am not trying to insult their marital vows, but I knew they were doomed from the beginning," says Watkins, who has given financial advice in USA Today and Forbes Magazine. "They were breaking all the rules of smart financial lovemaking."
When referring to the relationship between Spears and Federline, Dr. Watkins cites many common themes in their pattern of mistakes. Watkins claims that the couple was too young and financially incompatible. "I am sure that he didn't enjoy being called Mr. Britney Spears," says Watkins, who is appearing in a documentary about Oprah Winfrey later this month. "In this financial lovemaking relationship, size does matter. Meaning, the size of Britney's bank account really threw Kevin for a loop."
Dr. Watkins says that there were some telling themes in the Spears-Federline relationship that exist in all bad relationships. First, they were making the mistakes of young people, but were allowed to make decisions undeterred because their wealth and fame protected them from the scrutiny of watchful elders. Secondly, Watkins notes that Spears' career has never been quite the same since she began to date Federline.
"They were on their way to becoming the white Bobby and Whitney," says Watkins. "Kevin Federline's real name should be Kevin Airline because he carried more baggage than Delta. He was bringing baby's mamas and all kinds of other drama into Britney's life that was surely going to make it complicated."
Watkins says that the public should not be surprised if Federline's attorneys challenge the prenuptial agreement.
"The easiest way to get someone to attach his/herself to you is to make them dependent upon you financially," says Watkins, who has lectured on Financial Theory in China and Germany. "Kevin is not going to go away anytime soon."
